Play Big in Toy Story Land
Disneyland Resort has Pixar Pier, but Walt Disney World has Toy Story Land. Let’s shrink to toy-size and explore the imaginative playground Andy created from the contents of his toy box. You can’t miss the 20-foot-tall talking Sheriff Woody and, of course, the iconic Pixar ball.
The whimsical 11-acre land inspired by the “Toy Story” films opened in 2018 in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park at Walt Disney World, with two brand-new attractions (plus one expanded favorite) and Woody’s Lunch Box, serving on-the-go menu items with a nostalgic twist. This year, the Rodeo Roundup BBQ table-service restaurant was added, inviting visiting “toys” to join a backyard barbecue.
In addition to favorite “Toy Story” characters, including Woody, Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, Buzz Lightyear, Slinky Dog, the Aliens, and plenty of Green Army Men, Imagineers also incorporated classic toys like Rubik’s Cubes, Dominos, and Tinkertoys.
“We had a great time playing with the idea of going into a world of toys,” Toy Story Land executive creative director Dave Minichiello explained when the land opened. “We not only incorporated all the storytelling elements and characters from the ‘Toy Story’ films but also a whole new world made of classic and new toys.”
The land is strung with colorful Christmas lights (which Andy undoubtedly swiped from his mom’s box of holiday decorations). They are supported by a helpful platoon, and even the merch carts are made from toys.
Andy’s massive shoe prints throughout the backyard remind us we are indeed toy-sized.
Consistently one of the most difficult Genie+ reservations to secure in Hollywood Studios is Slinky Dog Dash, a family-friendly coaster that zips around curves, over hills, and down drops.
The ride even features a musical “Grand Finale” starring Wheezy, the toy penguin.
Buzz Lightyear stands guard outside Alien Swirling Saucers.
Along with a friendly alien.
With the same “figure eight” ride system as Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree in Cars Land, the ride takes toys 32″ and taller on a cruise around three spinning circle tracks in flying saucers chauffeured by the little green aliens.
Even though it was already a popular attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Toy Story Mania received a new carnival game box entrance from Toy Story Land (and a third track) when the land opened.
Because even toys need to eat, Andy built Woody’s Lunch Box from a vintage lunch box and thermos. It’s no wonder the quick-service spot serves up a taste of lunchtime nostalgia. My personal favorite is the Grilled Three-Cheese Sandwich made with cheddar, provolone and — to guarantee a gooey center — a sharp-cheddar cream cheese spread (created just for this sandwich).
At Rodeo Roundup BBQ, toys enjoy all-you-care-to-eat barbecue favorites served family-style. But remember to freeze whenever humans approach.
Young-looking toys should also be prepared to show their warranty information if they plan to order a cocktail.
