Dolls and bears take center stage: Yenke Peddler antiques

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Good news on the collecting front -- auctions have realized top prices in the toy world. A recent Theraults presentation offered a 22-inch, 1916 rare French Bisque Art Character doll by Albert Marque that sold for $170,000.
The costume was Russian embroidery, hand-stitched by the artists -- quite exquisite and mint. The group was also employed by a Paris fashion house.
Also included in this auction was a Schoenhut circus instrumental band. The wooden toys were made from the 1890s to the 1930s in Philadelphia. Getting a complete set is a rarity; the band driver with bent knees is also a rare find.
There were also a few pieces from the Shirley Temple collection.
Do you have a rare toy? Bring it to the Northern Ohio Doll and Bear Show Aug. 27 at the Best Western Plus (originally the Holiday Inn Select), on Ohio 82 in Strongsville. Located right off Interstate 71, hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for regular shoppers, with $5 admission. Early birds are welcomed at 9 a.m. for $15.
Eileen Green of the Intensive Care Doll Hospital in Chesterland hosts this popular show, and offers doll stringing for a fee. The show is full, with a wide array of dealers. Stop by and enjoy!
Dear Brenda,
I got this doll 47 years ago. I lived in a double in Lakewood and found her in our basement. I think she was already old when I found her! Can you tell me about her and what she is worth?
J.G.
Hi Judy,
You did a great job rescuing this “Heidi” type doll with mohair braids. She exhibits American traits from the 1930s, as seen in the poured composition head and chest plate. The twill cotton body has articulated arms with sewn hands, and the legs seem to be unjointed. The velvet slippers are sewn unto the feet, making sure her shoes are always intact. Value would be $75.
